The Healing Power of Color

The Blooming Wall at Iowa Children's Hospital features a stunning array of aluminum panels in 36 custom colors of Sherwin-Williams' Fluropon 70 percent PVDF extrusion coating.

Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital has taken a new approach to the word “healing” by installing a two-story Blooming Wall that greets patients and visitors as they enter the hospital lobby.  By using a range of colors that suggest calmness and health, the ZGA architectural team wanted to “create a positive, comforting experience for patient families and visitors from the first impression.”  The installation, created by Larry Kirkland, contains 2,780 triangle-shaped aluminum panels with 36 custom colors that enchant and gently distract its viewers through architectural scale and coloration.  “This visual wonder signals that hope is at hand.”  The goal is to have patients feel that they have entered a realm of exceptional intelligence, care, and beauty.
